Start your Alaska vacation in Fairbanks. Check in to Pike's Waterfront Lodge for two nights. Here are some "Insider tips" for a successful Alaska tour! Day 1: Pike's is right next to the Riverboat Discovery. This is a "MUST-SEE" attraction in Fairbanks. I waited 20 years to take this trip...don't make the same mistake! You'll see Alaska Bush Pilots, Iditarod champion Susan Butcher and her sled dogs and a Native Alaskan village on the banks of the Tanana River. The Binkley family has operated riverboats in Alaska for about 100 years. Don't miss this GREAT trip. Day 2: Pan for gold! Check out one of the giant gold dredges (Gold Dredge #8) that worked the Chena River Valley as late as the 1950s. Plus, there's a great trip to the El Dorado Gold Mine, where you'll get to pan for gold! Day 3. Do an Arctic Circle "Fly/Drive" tour up the Dalton Highway. This is the "haul road" that goes up to Prudhoe Bay on Alaska's North Slope. It follows the course of the Alaska Pipeline. Day 4-5. Head up to Chena Hot Springs. You can spend two days soaking in the springs and hiking in the surrounding hills. The food is great, too! It's an easy 60-mile drive from downtown Fairbanks. Day 6-7. Take an Alaska rail tour south to Denali National Park. Plan on taking the Tundra Wildlife Tour into the park and bring your camera! Day 8-9: There's never enough time to see everything. But if you have some time, head south to Wrangell St. Elias National Park and the historic towns of Kennicott and McCarthy. Day 10: Check the map and see what you've missed.
