Things To Do In Juneau | Juneau Tours & Juneau Attractions | Alaska's Capital City
Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, is at the heart of every cruise ship voyage along the fabled Inside Passage. Visitors that arrive here immediately learn there are a lot of things to do in Juneau.
Juneau is the only state capital that is not accessible by road. You can sail in on a cruise ship, arrive by the Alaska Marine Highway (the ferry) or fly. If you arrive by ferry, it’s just a 60-mile journey from Haines. Haines is accessible from the Alcan Highway. If you’re sailing from the south, you can board the ferry either in Bellingham, Washington or Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
Although it is a magnet for travelers from around the world, Juneau is busy year-round with state government. There’s also a large commercial fishing fleet home-ported in Juneau. Plus, there are world-class mining operations nearby.
There are several airports in Juneau. Gastineau Channel in downtown Juneau is one floatplane port—where planes land next to the cruise ships for flightseeing tours. Nearby is a “heliport” for Era Helicopters—for flightseeing on the Taku Glacier. The main airport is located 15 minutes from downtown, where 737s take off several times each day. Also, the airport hosts a number of flightseeing and regional airlines to take people to the neighboring communities of Skagway, Haines, Hoonah, Sitka, Glacier Bay and a host of other small communities.
If you love the outdoors, you don’t have to go far from downtown Juneau. There is a summertime tram that whisks people from the cruise ship dock to Mt. Roberts. And just a 20-minute drive from downtown is the majestic Mendenhall Glacier. Folks who call Juneau home enjoy exploring the outdoors 12 months a year. For example, kayakers enjoy paddling in front of Mendenhall Glacier in the summer. In the winter, it’s a big ice skating rink!
But in the summertime, Juneau rolls out the red carpet. From fishing, to whale-watching, to helicopter flightseeing to exploring the fabulous mountain trails —Juneau offers a big bundle of activities and attractions.
