10 Must-Visit Destinations in Alaska for 2022

Everyone’s ready to start traveling again. Alaska is at the top of everyone’s list, in part because of our world-famous wide-open-spaces. Face it: nobody does “social distancing” like Alaska.

For you, we’ve curated an exclusive list of destinations throughout the state. Check ‘em out. Feel free to print this out and make it your “bucket list” for the Last Frontier.

Send us some pictures. We love pictures. Email Scott McMurren!

1. Flightseeing Denali.

Denali Flightseeing - K2 Aviation

It’s one thing to see Denali. There’s a pretty good view from the O’Malley Road overpass in Anchorage. But that’s 160 miles away. To get up-close-and-personal, drive up to Talkeetna, 130 miles north of Anchorage.

K2 Aviation runs flights all day up to Denali. Around Denali. Over Denali. Dropping climbers off. K2’s signature trip is a glacier landing on the Ruth Glacier.

You’ll take off on the pavement at the Talkeetna Airport, but you’ll touch down with skis on the surface of the glacier. You’ll spend about 20 minutes scampering around in the snow. Take all the photos you like. Hey—we’ve done at least two Christmas card shots right there. The planes are vintage #AvGeek luvables: DHC-2 Beaver + DHC-3 Otter (turbine). It’s worth writing home about. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

2. Cruise in Kenai Fjords National Park.

Kenai Fjords - Major Marine Tours

Don’t cut corners on this: take the five-hour cruise from Seward. You’ll start out at the small boat harbor in Seward, cruising through Resurrection Bay. Chances are good you’ll spot an eagle, an otter, some puffins, and maybe some Dall’s Porpoise within the first five minutes.

But the best is yet to come. Further out in Resurrection Bay, keep your eyes open for humpback whales, orca whales, sea lions and all sorts of critters.

The captain has their sights set on Aialik Bay and the signature Aialik Glacier. Once you’re up close, the captain will stop the engine so you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the park. Until a big chunk of ice falls off with a huge BOOM. You’ll love this trip with Major Marine Tours. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

3. Ride on the Mighty Alaska Railroad.

Alaska Railroad

The Alaska Railroad goes through some of the most scenic slices of Alaska. It’s the perfect way to see the Last Frontier. Whether it’s between Anchorage and Denali or Anchorage and Seward, you’ll love riding on the railroad. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

4. Catch a giant Alaska salmon!

Alaska Salmon Fishing

The fish in Alaska are legendary. And not just the salmon, either. Halibut, rockfish, ling cod—they’re all delicious.
Fish with RW's on the world-famous Kenai River.

Wherever you decide to go fishing, be prepared to catch “the big one!” (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

5. Sail on the Riverboat Discovery in Fairbanks.

Riverboat Discovery - Fairbanks

No visit to the “Golden Heart City” of Fairbanks is complete without a visit to the Riverboat Discovery.

Sail on the big sternwheeler on the Tanana River down to the confluence with the mighty Nenana River. Along the way you’ll meet a musher, see a Bush plane land and take-off and visit a replica of a Native Alaska village site. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

6. Visit the ghost town of Kennicott, in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Kennicott Glacier Lodge

This is the nation’s largest national park, home to huge mountains and glaciers you can walk to. Stay at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge along the “Main Street” of Kennicott, once home to the world’s largest copper mine. The National Park Service has restored many of the buildings and there are tours through some of the most historic sites. Take a hike on a glacier. Enjoy a flightseeing trip over the Copper River, over Root Glacier, and over the old mine site. This is a wonderful adventure. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

7. Visit Glacier Bay National Park.

Glacier Bay Alaska

Just 60 air miles from Juneau, access the park from the town of Gustavus. Stay at the Glacier Bay Lodge. Take the all-day Glacier Bay cruise/tour, deep into the park. Learn the history of the park, watch for whales and sea lions. Hang out in front of some of the most active glaciers as big icebergs tumble into the sea. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

8. Take the Mt. Roberts Tram for a bird’s eye view of Juneau.

Mt. Roberts Tramway - Juneau, Alaska

The tram goes almost straight up the face of Mt. Roberts from the cruise ship dock downtown. From there, you can hike as little or as much as you want—even up to the top of Mt. Roberts itself. There are several spots along the way which afford million-dollar views of Juneau, Gastineau Channel—even the airport, 15 miles away. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies.)

9. Visit Wrangell and take a cruise to see LeConte Glacier.

LeConte Glacier - Wrangell, Alaska

Sail on the Chutine Warrior from Wrangell over to LeConte Glacier. It’s a beautiful cruise and features some incredible ice. Depending on the weather, your captain can pick through the loose ice so you can get up-close-and-personal with one of Alaska’s southernmost glaciers. (Alaska TourSaver discount applies)

10. Go flightseeing in Misty Fjords National Monument.

Taquan Air - Misty Fjords Flightseeing

Take off from downtown Ketchikan with Taquan Air on the Tongass Narrows and fly over the mountains to this stunning monument—featuring granite cliffs that plunge 3,000 feet down to sea level. Watch for sheep, bear and other critters. There are alpine lakes, waterfalls and incredible scenery. (AlaskaTourSaver discount applies.)
